Wing Chun Fight Club, Kowloon, Hong Kong Classic Tee
The Wing Chun Fight Club of Hong Kong has been reinvented many times over the years. It originated in the rooftop challenge matches -- called beimo -- of the 1950s and 1960s. These volatile fights became infamous in the Wan Chai district and across the bay in Kowloon. Several fighters became legendary, such as Wong Shun Leung and Bruce Lee.
During the late 1960s, soldiers and sailors on furlough from the Vietnam War sought out fight clubs that had moved underground or were set up in corners of warehouses. At first local authorities turned a blind eye, but after several serious injuries most clubs were shut down or restricted only to locals.
Hong Kong's economy began to grow dramatically through the 1980s and 1990s, and the Kowloon Fight Clubs soon fell under the domain of the Chinese Triads like 14K (十四K) and rival Sun Yee On (新義安). The vicious fights became a hot spot for both gamblers and for streetfighters looking to make a name for themselves. Until the early 2000s, fighters would come from all over the world to compete in the bloody and sometimes savage fights.
In 2014, two students of Wong Shun Leung began to reclaim the tarnished reputation of the Wing Chun Fight Club by re-establishing it as a modern Kwoon. For the last decade it has quietly grown into one of the best Wing Chun schools in the world, teaching privately to students from America, Australia, Germany, South Africa and Thailand. While the rooftop is currently unaccessible, space is set aside to honor any potential challenge matches.
This classic tee features a full-back dragon design, the Wing Chun Fight Club logo on the chest, and the Kung Fu symbol on the left sleeve. The dragon illustration is by master designer Harry Kasyanov.
